Gentamicin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic of bactericidal action. In appearance, it is a colorless or slightly yellow transparent solution for injection.

STRUCTURE

The drug is a mixture of several antibiotics produced by Micromonospora purpurea and in 1 ml contains 40 mg of gentamicin sulfate and auxiliary components: sodium pyrosulfite, disodium salt of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and water for injection. In appearance, it is a colorless or slightly yellow transparent solution for injection. The drug is packaged in 100 ml glass bottles.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Gentamicin has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action. It is active against most Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms, including proteus, Escherichia, Salmonella and staphylococci. The antibiotic does not work on anaerobic bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa.

When administered intramuscularly, the drug penetrates well into many organs and tissues. The maximum concentration in the blood is reached 1 hour after administration. After a single injection, the therapeutic concentration of the antibiotic in the body is maintained for 8 to 12 hours after administration. When used orally, the drug is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and has its effect only in the intestine for 12 hours. With parenteral administration of gentamicin, the antibiotic is excreted unchanged from the body mainly in the urine, and with oral administration-with feces.

INDICATIONS

It is prescribed to cattle, horses, pigs, dogs and cats for the treatment of gastrointestinal, respiratory diseases, sepsis, peritonitis, meningitis, pyelonephritis and other diseases caused by antibiotic-sensitive microorganisms.

APPLICATION

Gentamicin solution is used intramuscularly or orally twice a day at intervals of 10-12 hours in the following doses:

The maximum volume of the drug for administration in one place to cattle and horses should not exceed 15 ml, pigs-10 ml, sheep-5 ml, dogs and cats-2.5 ml.

SIDE EFFECTS

With increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the drug, it is possible: refusal of food, vomiting, impaired coordination of movements. In these cases, the use of the drug is discontinued, the animal is prescribed desensitizing therapy. In rare cases, the animal may develop edema at the injection site, which resolves spontaneously within 1 to 2 days and does not require treatment.

Slaughter of animals for meat is allowed no earlier than 21 days after the last use of the drug. The meat of animals forcibly killed before the expiration of the specified period can be used as food for fur-bearing animals. Milk obtained from animals treated with gentamicin should not be used for food purposes during the treatment period and within 72 hours after the last administration of the drug.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Increased individual sensitivity of animals to gentamicin sulfate. The drug should not be prescribed with antibiotics of the penicillin, streptomycin, kanamycin and neomycin groups, as well as mixed in one syringe with other drugs. It is not allowed to use the drug in severe renal impairment.

STORAGE

Store in the closed packaging of the manufacturer, in a dry, protected from light, out of the reach of children and animals, separately from food and feed at a temperature of plus 5°C to plus 25 °C. Shelf life under storage conditions is 2 years from the date of production.
