Pharmacological action
Antimalarial agent, a derivative of 4-methanolquinoline. Mefloquine acts on asexual intracellular erythrocyte forms of human malaria pathogens Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, on circulating schizonts Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale. It is inactive against the liver stages of parasites. It is effective against malaria pathogens that are resistant to other antimalarial drugs, for example, chloroquine, proguanil, pyrimethamine and a combination of pyrimethamine with sulfonamides. For R. falciparum, it is possible to develop resistance to mefloquine mainly in Southeast Asia. In some regions, there is cross-resistance between mefloquine and halofantrine, mefloquine and quinine.

Treatment of mild and moderate forms of malaria caused by strains of R. falciparum resistant to other antimalarial drugs, R. vivax and malaria of mixed etiology. Given that the sensitivity of the pathogen may vary over time and depending on the geographical area, it is recommended to follow the instructions of national and international guidelines. Prevention of malaria in people traveling to malaria-prone regions, especially in regions with a high risk of infection with P. falciparum strains resistant to other antimalarial drugs. Emergency therapy (self-help): self-admission as an emergency treatment for suspected malaria, if it is not possible to receive urgent medical care.

Contraindications to use
Hypersensitivity to mefloquine or similar drugs (quinine, quinidine). Concomitant use with halofantrin, taking halofantrin after mefloquine therapy for 15 weeks after the latter is discontinued. Co-administration with ketoconazole, administration of ketoconazole after mefloquine therapy for 15 weeks after discontinuation of the latter. Use for prophylactic purposes in the active form of depression and severe mental disorders, convulsions (including in the anamnesis). Children under 3 months of age or with a body weight of less than 5 kg (limited experience).
With caution: liver failure, epilepsy, mental illness, heart disease, age over 65 years. In combination with quinine and quinidine.
