Pharmacological action
A drug of biological origin with antimicrobial and antidiarrheal action. Medicinal yeast has an antimicrobial effect due to an antagonistic effect against pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms: Clostridium difficile, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida kruesei, Candida albicans, Candida pseudotropicalis (in vitro also against Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Yersinia enterocolitica). It inhibits the growth of these microorganisms, as well as Enthamoeba hystolitica, Lambliae. Increases local immune defense due to increased production of IgA and other immunoglobulins.
It has an antitoxic effect, especially against Clostridium difficile toxins that cause pseudomembranous colitis, as well as enterotoxins. The mechanism of antitoxic action is associated with the production of a neutralizing factor that acts on intestinal cells through a receptor connected to G protein, as well as with adhesion to enterocytes and a decrease in the activation of adenylate cyclase by enterotoxins and, consequently, a decrease in the secretion of water and salts.
Increases the activity of small intestine disaccharidases (lactase, sucrose, maltase). It has a trophic effect on the mucous membrane of the small intestine due to the polyamines spermin and spermidin.
